Alien vs. Predator 3 - Sequel or Reboot the franchise?
Chris
AdminJungle HunterJun-26-2016 11:08 AMIt's no surprise that throughout 2017 and 2018, Alien and Predator will be making a big comeback in Hollywood. Now, I'm extremely thrilled to see both Alien: Covenant and The Predator take these franchises back to their respective roots, but the thought in the back of everyone's mind is - will these two ever cross paths again?
Growing up I was a huge fan of Dark Horse Comics' Aliens vs. Predator comicbook line. The story, the characters, everything about it I loved.
When Paul W.S. Anderson's Alien vs. Predator movie hit in 2004, I was less than impressed, only to be totally turned off the AvP franchise when it's sequel AvP: Requiem arrived a few years later.
Most will agree the AvP film adaptations lacked key factors which made the original series stand out. The concept had so much potential, had they utilized a better cast, a better script and better suited directors.
My question today is, if Fox choose to revisit this crossing of franchises down the road, because we all know it's a money maker and will likely be discussed following the success of Alien: Covenant and The Predator, should they continue on the same plotline left behind by the established AvP films? Or, should they reboot the series completely, giving the reigns to a more deserving director, casting and writing better characters and setting the film in a more believable timeline?
Personally, I'm all for a reboot. A deep space war, between Colonial Marines, Aliens and Predators are what made the games so effective. Bring back the suspense, tension and horror and you could very easily create an amazing versus flick. They would need to show respect of course to both IPs, not treating and showing Aliens as mindless insects and not teaming Humans up with Predators. A free for all, set in the far future, maybe even on board a USCM vessel or Weyland-Yutani ship, who knows!
My point is, the potential for these two crossing paths again is there and I would totally get behind it, but only if Fox took it seriously and treat it with the same respect and devotion as what they're showing towards Covenant and The Predator. Who's with me?

MemberChestburtsterJun-27-2016 6:21 PMPrometheus had much fewer critics than either AvP. Or Alien3. Or Resurrection.

MemberAlien WarriorJun-28-2016 3:51 PMYeah i never meant to imply it had more..
Just that Prometheus was a movie that disappointed and polarized some fans.
I think Prometheus and AVP in a similar way did not show what Fans had expected... I think the Ancient Alien links in both are one thing that did cause a concern in some fans eyes.
But AVPR was a major let down, their was a chance to expand and improve on AVP but it was wasted.
I think Prometheus Critics, where fans who never knew the Alien connections and so a ambiguous movie that it was, would have been confusing.... Alien Franchise Fans would have made connections but then there was some Alien Fans who demanded more and then not seeing things like Xenos and Eggs, and Derelict had disappointed them.
But my other point being that % wise the movies all made a decent Profit and Turn Over and this is why AVPR was made... but not much thought or effort went into it.
It would be the same Horror if a Prometheus Sequel was made to fit into Alien Connection more, but then given a not well known Director, a Small Budget similar to AVPR and poor cast.... can you imagine the result.
Hopefully Fox are taking Alien Franchise and Predator serious now, and after the disappointment with AVP movies i am not sure they would pursue another soon.
But they sure as Hell will in future as a way of Making Money if they can double their return or more they would keep making them.
Which is a concern i have for the Alien Prequels and Aliens Sequels as simply cashing in on the COW.
Like Disney will do with Star Wars... yep... EP10-12 about 4-6 Spin Offs and 1-2 Ewok Movies over the next 15 years you go and see.
and so if they make Alien Prequel 1-3 they become more Fan Service, and a Alien 5 and 6, then a Prometheus Follow on that explores Events of the Engineers not related to the Xeno or Mankind.
If all these do well, and Predator 4, then a 5 then its only a matter of time for Aliens vs Predators vs Engineers lol

MemberAlien WarriorJun-28-2016 4:00 PMI think companies are running out of ideas...
And will cash in on the easy options...
I dont think we have seen our Last Terminator movie, look at Transformers i expect another 1-2 more of these after The Last Knight.
After the Justice League i expect a Batman Re-boot Trilogy etc.
I think Movie Companies will continue this way and thus see few more Jurassic Park Movies, what about Ghost Busters 3? will we see a Ghost Busters 4 i think so and if this one is a bigger hit then maybe we would see a 5?
I dont think any Franchise that has comprised of more than 2 movies is safe..... Back to the Future 4-6 i think would definitely happen down the line.
These can work if they are thought out and given good budget and time and cast.... but when they are not then we get the Disappointments that AVP and AVPR were.
We have to remember Ridleys Dream was a more Alieny Alien Prequel.. and double the budget he had to play with. But Fox changed that.

MemberChestburtsterJun-28-2016 4:05 PMAnd Ridley went along with it. It's naïve to simply blame Fox, when Riddles has enough clout to say exactly what he wants and get it.
As for franchise sequels - why wouldn't you? Every sequel cashes in on what came before, because you don't need to find an audience.

Yep. Expectation is a bitch. It doesn't matter how good a filmmaker you are, the sequel will very rarely stand upto the original, mainly due to expectation.
And re-boots, no matter if the original is bad or not, just don't even attempt it!
The poster was good though!

MemberFacehuggerJun-28-2016 4:28 PMWhat's wrong with rebooting a franchise that has promise because something went wrong? We wouldn't have the Nolan Batman films if they just gave up after Batman and Robin. I Think rebooting something is fine if either a: enough time has passed and you can tell your own story in an interesting way that might have conflicted with other movies, or b: the first attempt was horrible.

MemberChestburtsterJun-28-2016 4:32 PMIf the film is ultimately entertaining, it doesn't matter if it's a sequel, reboot or anything else.

MemberBloodedJun-28-2016 4:46 PMI just don't like re-boots. It's that simple.
Some people don't like vegetables because it leaves a bad taste in their mouth.
Some people don't like Beiber, Britney or Beyoncé.
Some people don't like football, baseball or basketball.
If you like re-boots, good for you.
Fill your boots! :)
The poster was good though!

MemberChestburtsterJun-28-2016 5:16 PMX-Men First Class and the new Planet of the Apes flicks were decent enough, even if they were pseudo-reboot/ prequels. Batman Begins was good. On the other hand I never saw the new Fantastic Four, but from all reports it's poor performance was deserved.

MemberFacehuggerJul-05-2016 4:46 AMPreferably they never make this again, but if they would decide to do another it should definitely be a reboot. The first was ok, the second was terrible, but both made the mistake of setting this on modern day earth. The alien is tied up so much to the future world that Ridley Scott and James Cameron created that it feels out of place outside of that. The predator is cool on its own, you can put it anywhere. So it is beyond me why they chose the setting that they did. I enjoyed the original comic, and the second Aliens vs Predator game had a great story too, so it can work. Just give it an Aliens vibe, put in marines and it could work.

MemberBloodedFeb-20-2017 6:05 AMI would love to see them have another bash at it but not for a few years. let ridley got his movies done along with alien5 and if there will be a sequel to the predator then let them get those out the way first. the 2 franchises need to recover from avp/ avpr. a good script and director who can bring something from the comics alive would be just the thing the crossover needs. but I hated the idea the predator already knew of the xeno. take the predator out of its comfort zone. maybe they r hunting colonial marines on a distant world. the marines r there regarding a xeno presence on a world marked for terraforming. the predators land on the planet oblivious to the xeno presence and bam, u have an all out battle where the predators, under equipt and unprepared for the ferocity of the xeno, r fighting for survival yet have discovered a more hostile prey to hunt in the future. perhaps the predators change tact and decide to capture a queen and the marines have to stop them? the xeno is doing its thing and killing everything and the marines r being hunted on both fronts and battle for survival

MemberYoung BloodFeb-20-2017 9:22 AMMy vision about true AvP movie:
Class: Horror, Space sci-fi.
Species/Number: 2 aliens (1 xeno- & 1 predalien), 2-3 predators (one is facehugger victim), 10 ppl (armed, but not Colonial Marines).
Place: Ancient engineer base with Giger-style.
Details: all races versus all. Not noble predators (but very evil and brutality space maniacs). Aliens is very smarter and much stronger than predators. Aliens not victim for predators, but ultimate space horror creature. Humans is not stupid meat.
BTW, AvP now: human<alien<predator or even alien<human<predator.
True AvP (in my vision): human<predator<alien or human<predator<engineer<alien.

MemberFacehuggerFeb-21-2017 2:41 AMAgree with everything you said. It should be set in the future, in the timeline of Alien/Aliens. I always enjoyed the original comic and I especially loved the story line of the AvP2 video game. It's tricky, and can easily become silly (as the two AvP movies have shown) but if it gets a decent budget, a sci-fi setting and a director who takes it seriously then we should be able to get a good film out of it. Most important things: Not on earth, not in the present day, and no teaming up of humans and predators. I would even suggest to remove the connection between the predator and aliens. Do it like in the second AvP game, Weyland Yutani researching the aliens and the engineers, and the predators getting drawn to this great battle arena to hunt some trophies.

MemberAlien EggApr-28-2017 10:32 AMI would LOVE a sequel or a reboot. I love the first AVP movie. I have seen it at least a hundred times. I love it because I have a crush on Scar (one of the Yautja's/predators). So honestly, I would love to see a new one. BUT, I have a demand.... They must include Ian Whyte!!! (Ian Whyte plays as all of the predators we see in Alien vs Predator AND Alien vs Predator Requiem. If he is in it, you should know that I will be the first one to get tickets to the movie.

MemberAlien WarriorApr-28-2017 8:33 PMNice to see this bumped...
Indeed i think a Reboot is needed and one that is set in the time line of Post Aliens in 2179, it could work if done right but i cant see this happening.
I think the cross-over will now be confined to Comics, and Books and Video Games and that Predator Franchise and Alien one will be kept as Two separate ones as far as Movies.
But if FOX feel it could make money then in what 20 years time who knows..

MemberAlien EggMay-18-2017 2:16 PMReally? Half of what I have read leads me to..."REALLY?"
Throughout the origins of BOTH franchise's, by story-line, mythology, et al., both species have been linked. The linkages can even be seen in most of all of the movies since the first Predator.
ALL AvP movies were poorly done, and in the wrong time line.
Prometheus adds ANOTHER variable to the entire universe.
Returning to each franchise being separate us smart at this time because the AvP's were BAD and Prometheus "muddied the waters."
Whether it is a complete re-boot, or just ignoring the bad, is irrevelant. Another AvP WILL happen for a miriade of reasons. All we can do is "HOPE" they get it right this time.
And before anyone says A's and P's don't belong together...take some time and research, if not actually read EVERYTHING ever written. Each race has it's own pro's/con's. Humans are phisacally mire weak than either. The A's abd P's are ALMOST equal in yheir own rights. The ONLY reason that humans can hold theur own against either us because humabs either won't, or don't know to, quit and lay down and die.
In this book/comic/movie series humans are like reality's U.S.M.C.: no retreat, no surrender, never back down, never give up...but sometimes uou have to back up to regroup.
If the AvP movies were done properly, and the installment of Prometheus was clearly outlined before release, then 95% of this whole debate wouldn't even be here

MemberAlien EggMar-14-2018 12:35 PMI think they should do a soft-reboot without referencing any of the previous AvP films directly. Do it in space in the future and feature Colonial Marines. The Peter Biggs concept was good, so they should reuse that.

MemberPredatorMar-14-2018 10:23 PMChris- I love AVP but AVPR was horrible. I love the idea of carrying on with that franchise. It might do well as a Netflix series? I am all for it!

MemberAlien EggAug-16-2018 11:24 PMsince Predator and Alien belong to other franchises it's probably too expensive with the royalties and stuff; it would have to be a blockbuster like Avengers for it to be worth it imo.
I do like all scifi stuff and actually enjoyed both AVP movies. First was my favorite, since the second one killed off the lil brother's love interest "accidently" (not even a good death!); I guess this movie (AVPR) was made in an era when useless female characters (eye candy) were starting to be phased out but not completely; tbh that's actually why I like the alien movies, the strong female roles.

MemberAlien DroneAug-17-2018 6:44 AMI still stand by a full fledged AVP reboot, I absolutely hate AVP (2004) and I think Requiem did a fine job freeing the Alien and Predator series from being stuck in that iteration of AVP.
They should outright ignore all the previous AVP films with only Predator, Predator 2, Predators, Alien, Aliens, Alien 3, Prometheus, and Alien Covenant kept in its canon. It should be set after Aliens, it should be loosely based on AVP 2/Primal Hunt's storyline with some updated references to the Prometheus and Covenant.
